Retwist Methods onExisting Locs

Every loc goes through a transformation over months and years. Understanding where your client is in that journey is the foundation of safe, effective retwist work.

Stage 1 - Starter / Baby Locs (0–6 months)

·Hair is freshly coiled, twisted, or braided into starter sections

·Very fragile - minimal manipulation is essential

·Sections can unravel easily if not properly maintained

·Products: light hold gels, no heavy butters

Stage 2 - Budding (3–9 months)

·Hair begins to swell and frizz at the roots and along the shaft

·The loc is "budding" - forming its permanent shape inside

·Do NOT over-manipulate during this stage

·Avoid pulling, excessive product buildup, or heavy retwists

Stage 3 - Teenage Locs (6–18 months)

·Locs are thickening and loc'ing more consistently

·Some sections may still separate or unravel if not maintained

·Regular retwists become more predictable and stable

·Client education is critical during this stage

Stage 4 - Mature Locs (1.5–3 years)

·Loc is fully loc'd throughout the shaft

·Strong, stable, and holds its shape well

·Most retwist methods can be safely used

·Focus shifts to scalp health and thickness management

Stage 5 - Rooted / Long-Term Locs (3+ years)

·Very dense, heavy locs with established roots

·Weight of the loc can cause thinning at the root if not properly maintained

·Retwist technique must account for tension and weight

Never begin a retwist without a thorough assessment. A 3-minute check can prevent a 3-hour mistake.

What to look for:

·Root tightness - how much new growth is present?

·Loc diameter - are locs thinning at the root?

·Scalp condition - dryness, buildup, inflammation, or tenderness

·Moisture levels - is the loc dry and brittle or supple?

·Freeform vs. manicured - client's maintenance preference

Red flags to address before retwisting:

·Thinning at the root (loc traction risk)

·Significant buildup that needs clarifying first

·Scalp inflammation or active breakage

·Locs that have been freeform for 6+ months without maintenance (requires detangling session first)
