Starting locs is a life decision for many clients. A thorough, empathetic consultation builds trust, sets expectations, and ensures the client is truly ready - protecting both of you.

What to Cover in the New Loc Consultation

A new loc consultation is different from a retwist consultation. This client is making a long-term commitment and may not fully understand what they are getting into.

Key questions to ask:

·"Have you had locs before? If so, what happened?"

·"What inspired you to start locs now?"

·"Have you researched the different starter methods? Do you have a preference?"

·"What size locs are you envisioning - thin, medium, or chunky?"

·"How much maintenance are you willing to do at home?"

·"Are you prepared for the 'ugly stage' (the budding phase where locs look messy)?"

Key things to explain to the client:

·The loc journey takes 1–3 years to fully mature - it requires patience

·Hair will appear shorter and bulkier during the budding phase

·They will need regular maintenance appointments (every 4–6 weeks minimum in the first year)

·Some hair textures loc faster or slower than others

·There is no "undoing" locs without cutting - be sure they are ready

The consultation protects YOU:

If a client is unhappy three months in because their locs look "messy," you can reference the consultation where you explained budding. Always document what was discussed.

Assessing Hair Type for Loc Installation

Not all hair types loc the same way. Your consultation must include a thorough hair assessment to determine the best installation method.

Hair type considerations:

·**Type 4a/4b/4c (tightly coiled):** Locs most easily and quickly. Almost any method works.

·**Type 3c/4a (curly-coily):** Locs well but may require a holding product to maintain twist during early stages.

·**Type 3a/3b (loosely curly):** Takes longer to loc. May require interlocking or braiding method for reliability.

·**Relaxed or chemically treated hair:** Can be loc'd but requires careful consultation. Chemically treated sections are weaker and may break during the budding phase.

·**Color-treated hair:** Assess damage levels - over-processed hair may not withstand the tension of installation.

Scalp assessment:

·Dry, flaky scalp: address before installation with a clarifying treatment

·Active dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis: recommend dermatologist visit first

·Thinning edges: avoid heavy tension methods near hairline
