The four pillars of great loc styling:

·**Structure** - the style has intentional shape and form

·**Longevity** - the style holds without constant manipulation

·**Scalp health** - the style does not create damaging tension

·**Client confidence** - the client leaves feeling like the best version of themselves

Styling assessment before you begin:

·What is the client's loc length and density?

·What is the occasion - everyday wear, event, or long-term protective style?

·Does the client have any scalp sensitivity or areas to avoid?

·What is the client's comfort level with tension?

Your creative process:

Before touching the hair, visualize the finished style. Know your starting point and your end goal. Locticians who begin without a plan often spend twice as long and create half the quality.

Every head of locs has a unique movement and texture. Working with the natural movement of the locs rather than against it creates styles that look effortless and last longer.

Reading the loc's natural movement:

·Hold a handful of locs and release them - where do they naturally fall? This is their "home."

·Notice if locs have a natural wave, curl, or directional tendency

·Shorter locs are more resistant to styling - work with what you have

·Longer, mature locs have more flexibility and can be shaped into more dramatic styles

How texture affects styling:

·Smooth, cylindrical locs: hold barrel rolls and updos cleanly

·Organic, fuzzy locs: create beautiful voluminous styles, texture adds depth

·Coily, bubbly locs: great for creative shapes, take longer to manipulate

·Very long, heavy locs: updos must account for weight - improper support causes tension
