Loc damage rarely happens overnight. It is almost always the result of months of accumulated neglect, incorrect technique, or unrealistic tension over time.

Primary causes of loc damage:

·**Traction alopecia** - chronic pulling or tight styles causing hair loss at the root

·**Over-manipulation** - excessive retwisting, especially when hair is dry

·**Product buildup** - wax and heavy products suffocating the loc shaft

·**Chemical damage** - bleaching, coloring, or relaxing previously loc'd hair

·**Mechanical damage** - snagging on jewelry, towel rubbing, or rough brushing

·**Improper drying** - locs left wet, causing mildew and interior breakdown

·**Poor installation** - sections that were too thin from the start

The assessment process:

1. Examine the entire head visually before touching

2. Gently feel each loc at the root - note any thinning, weakness, or brittleness

3. Check the scalp for inflammation, scarring, or bare patches

4. Ask the client about their history: previous stylists, products used, any incidents

5. Take photos before beginning any repair work - for your records and liability protection

Not all damage is equal. Classify before you quote a price or make promises.

Level 1 - Minor damage:

·Slight thinning at root of 1–3 locs

·Surface dryness and brittleness

·Minor product buildup

·Treatable with moisture therapy and technique adjustment

Level 2 - Moderate damage:

·Thinning at root affecting 4–10 locs

·Small bare patch of scalp in one localized area

·Significant buildup requiring clarifying treatment

·Some locs may need to be combined or repaired

Level 3 - Severe damage:

·Extensive thinning throughout the head

·Multiple bald patches or significant traction alopecia

·Locs hanging by very few hair strands at the root

·Requires referral to a dermatologist in addition to salon care

·Honest conversation about realistic expectations is required

Your responsibility:

Be honest with your client about what is achievable. Do not promise results you cannot deliver. A client who understands their damage and sees gradual improvement trusts you far more than one who was given false hope.
