Wicks are large, thick, freeform locs created by allowing multiple hair strands and smaller locs to naturally merge and congoin into one dramatic, chunky loc. They are most commonly associated with South Florida loc culture but have grown in popularity nationwide.

Key characteristics of wicks:

·Significantly larger diameter than traditional locs - can be as thick as a finger or larger

·Typically fewer in number (some clients have as few as 4–12 total wicks)

·Often have an organic, irregular shape that cannot be perfectly replicated

·Can take years to develop naturally, or can be sculpted by a trained loctician

·The weight of mature wicks is significant and requires scalp health management

How wicks form:

Wicks form when individual locs are intentionally or naturally allowed to join at the root, then continue to merge along the shaft over time. A skilled loctician can guide this process - encouraging specific locs to merge while keeping others separate - to create a deliberate pattern.

The two types of wick clients:

·**Starting from scratch:** Client wants to start their hair journey with wicks - large sections are installed from the beginning

·**Converting existing locs:** Client already has traditional locs and wants to combine them into wicks - requires careful consultation and a gradual process

Combination locs blend two or more different loc types, textures, or formation methods within the same head of hair to create a unique, customized aesthetic.

Common combination approaches:

·**Wicks + traditional locs** - some areas have large wicks while others retain traditional-sized locs (usually framing the face or at the nape)

·**Freeform + manicured** - some sections grow organically while others are maintained with regular retwists

·**Different textures** - incorporating loc extensions of a different texture alongside natural locs

·**Multiple sizes** - intentionally mixing thin, medium, and thick locs for a dimensional look

Why clients choose combination locs:

·Creative expression and unique personal style

·Strategic use of natural hair density (thicker areas may support larger wicks; finer areas may need traditional-sized locs)

·Transitioning from one loc style to another gradually

Your responsibility as the loctician:

Combination loc services require a very high level of communication and planning. The client must understand that once locs are merged, they cannot be unmerged without cutting. This decision is permanent.
